Sony Ericsson C902

Sony Ericsson has gone away from its old-age naming convention by releasing a Cybershot series phone away from the K- series officially known for camera oriented phones. Announced in recent Barcelona GSM Congress, the phone is absolutely stunning and surprisingly very thin for camera phones.

Key Phone Features

  • Slim design with a premium handset feel
  • Best camera in the Cyber-shot range
  • Geo-tagging
  • HSDPA Web browsing speeds

The phone comes in ultra thin bar shape with thickness of just 10mm. The phone looks chic and sexy as it is thin but doesn’t compromise with any of the features here. The phone is a quad band device featuring newest 3.5G HSDPA technology. The screen is ample 2.4 inches which makes it well suited for using as view finder of the phone. The display is even better than that of W910i which was already very crispy bright and clearly visible under sunlight.

Let’s go straight to the camera part of this mobile phone. The camera is equipped with a 5megapixel sensor with Carl Zeiss lens which in fact becoming standard in the mobile industry, but Sony makes cut with very efficient and fast photo algorithms which promise crisp pictures with least shutter lags. The camera fires through the dedicated camera capture button or when you open the active lens cover. The cover exposes the sensor, photo light lamp, and self portrait mirror. Though it would have been excellent that if they could provide xenon flash rather than photolight. The camera has same interface like that of K850i.

When you open the camera, the lighting on the phone changes dramatically with the white light from buttons fading away giving way to blue lighted keypad which highlighted dedicated buttons for camera mode. The camera functionality boasts features including face detection and autofocus capabilities which ensure focused pictures of face of the person in picture rather than background. Also featured are Bestpic, red eye reduction and a image stabilizer which in recent time have become almost standard features of all Ericsson’s Cybershot series phones - no, unfortunately this one isn’t optical.

A Quick Hands-on with the C902

Keys for settings and changing modes on the camera are situated just on the top of the display, they are normally invisible and lighted only when the phone is used for camera functionality.

Other things like a walkman styled media player with mp3/aac/mp4 video support, PIM features like notes, tasks calendar, all help to make this phone a great little handset, but one can’t help but consider some of the features lacking from this handset, like WiFi and GPS.

The phone is set to be released with two colors: Luscious Red and Swift Black. The package is very promising, but could have made us drool over the specs if it had GPS and rugged use feature which is found in its younger brother c702. It’s a good phone and guaranteed to make a niche of its own in market provided Sony Ericsson doesn’t delay its launch in market.
